A couple of decades ago, it would have been hard to believe that flat screen televisions would become standard equipment in the automotive industry, yet Audi was among the first automakers to offer them in its luxuriously refined models. Now, Audi offers the crowd at CES 2019 a glimpse into the future of in-car entertainment: virtual reality.
The annual Consumer Electronics Show showcases the leading edge of new tech toys and products for tomorrow’s market, and it’s always been an arena for automakers to show off their latest innovations from vehicle safety to comfort features. As usual, Audi brought its A-game, showing off its recently developed working prototype of an in-car virtual reality experience.
Audi engineers developed the new tech through the company’s subsidiary Audi Electronics Venture GmbH, and Audi plans to market it through a newly created start-up it has co-founded called holoride GmbH. Rear passengers wear a lightweight VR headset that creates an immersive experience that responds to the vehicle motion as the driver speeds along the road. The VR experience can range from the latest Hollywood movies and fun video games to educational experiences like tours of famous museums or even exploring the human bloodstream. When the vehicle turns, the passengers will experience the same turn inside their VR environments. Since it can react to the actual vehicle movements, this tech could also be used to mitigate motion sickness for some passengers.
At CES, Audi offers participants the chance to experience the prototype with a flight in space. Audi teamed up with Disney Games and Interactive Experiences to create “Marvel’s Avengers: Rocket’s Rescue Run.” Players will fly in a spacecraft along with Rocket Racoon from Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avengers” films. The ship in the game moves with the e-tron’s actual movements on the track, creating one of the truest VR experiences available. According to holoride, consumers can expect to see this VR prototype become an available feature in Audi models within the next three years. For now, the all-new Audi e-tron offers one of the most advanced all-electric luxury platforms on the road, and you can test drive that state-of-the-art model today, right here at Velocity Honolulu.
